A Melbourne man who stalked a 10-year-old schoolgirl and filmed his daughter’s slumber party friends while they slept has been jailed.
In the Victorian County Court on Friday, the man, who cannot be identified, was sentenced to a minimum one year in jail for nine charges, including possessing child pornography and indecent assault.
Justice Sue Pullen said much of the man’s offending, between January 2005 and August 2011, amounted to serious breaches of trust which caused several victims to suffer considerably.
The man, in his 40s, filmed himself performing an indecent act beside his young cousin while she slept in his daughter’s bedroom.
He also used his phone to film the same act beside a 10-year-old girl who was friends with his daughter as she slept on the couch in his house.
A police raid on his home in August 2011, uncovered those two videos, along with 75 more on his computer.
Police rated the content of 30 of the videos as category four, the second highest on the scale of abuse.
Justice Pullen said it was disturbing his offending continued outside his own home, including the repeated stalking of a 10-year-old girl in his car as she walked home from school in suburban Melbourne.
On one occasion the man pulled over and asked the girl to approach his car, but she refused.
Justice Pullen acknowledged the man’s guilty plea to all charges and the fact he now acknowledged his “sexual issues”.
But she said she was concerned that he was yet to take any steps to address them.
“At this stage you’ve not undertaken any programs to address your sexual issues,” she said.
“You are yet to undertake counselling and treatment.”
The man was sentenced to one year, 11 months and 21 days in jail but will be eligible for parole in 12 months.
