The Liberals will not run a candidate in next month’s by-election for the state seat of Melbourne.
The by-election, on Saturday, July 21, follows the resignation of former longstanding Labor minister Bronwyn Pike.
Liberal Party state director Damien Mantach confirmed in a statement it will not contest the seat.
He said it is the seventh Labor-initiated state by-election, in a safe seat, in five years.
Ms Pike retained the seat in 2010 with an increased margin of six per cent after the Liberal Party decided not to preference the Greens.
The Liberals also did not contest the Niddrie by-election in March, following the retirement of veteran Labor MP Rob Hulls.
