Victoria’s jobless rate has slightly risen, according to the latest employment figures.
The unemployment rate in May was 5.4 per cent, up from 5.3 per cent in April according to Australian Bureau of Statistics labour force figures.
Treasurer Kim Wells said it was a stable result for Victoria, with employment growing by 13,500 jobs last month.
Mr Wells said the figures showed the state’s economy was resilient, despite weaker global conditions.
He said Victorian employment had risen by 49,000 jobs in the past three months.
Mr Wells said the government had a clear plan to strengthen the state’s finances, drive productivity and generate new jobs and investment.
“The coalition government’s economic strategy is underpinned by a record state infrastructure spend of $5.8 billion in this year’s budget,” he said.
However, opposition employment spokesman Tim Pallas said the state was going backwards under Ted Baillieu’s government, which needed to deliver a clear infrastructure plan to kickstart the economy.
“Business confidence is falling, unemployment is rising and the business and construction industry is calling for Mr Baillieu to take action, yet the premier continues to do nothing,” he said.
