The Victorian government will consider new laws to make taxi drivers safer after a cabbie was stabbed to death in suburban Melbourne.
Premier Ted Baillieu said the driver’s murder was a shocking and appalling tragedy and he expressed his sympathy to the man’s family and friends.
Mr Baillieu said the safety of Victoria’s taxi drivers was paramount and the government would implement any recommendations by Victoria Police to strengthen protection in the industry.
This could include new laws for assaults against taxi drivers if recommended by police.
“I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to look at that, if that’s the recommendation of Victoria Police,” Mr Baillieu told reporters.
“As far as I’m concerned, nothing’s off the table.
“The safety of drivers is paramount, we’ve said that from the start; we’ve said it for many years now and I think that would be the view of drivers and the view of the wider community.”
Mr Baillieu said while it was mandatory for safety screens to be available for taxi drivers to install, the government had taken steps in recent months to make them even more available.
He said the government would introduce any new laws as quickly as possible.
Acting Opposition Leader James Merlino said the opposition would support any new laws that made taxi drivers safer.
