New York, NY, November 4, 2014 – New York City Veterans Community leaders today announced details for the third annual Veterans Week NYC — an ambitious schedule of both public and invitation only events and benefits. On November 11 the Week’s marquee event takes place, “America’s Parade,” the 95th annual New York City Veterans Day Parade, the largest celebration of service in the nation, with participants from all over the U.S. marching up Fifth Avenue.
“Veterans Week NYC, with America’s Parade as its centerpiece, features an amazing lineup of events that celebrate and honor the brave men and women, past and present, who serve in the U.S. military,” said Vince McGowan, President of the United War Veterans Council (UWVC), producers of the Parade. “Veterans Week and America’s Parade offer New Yorkers and America the ideal venue to honor and say ‘Thank You’ to the nation’s vets for all that they do and the sacrifices they make.”
Veterans Week NYC 2014, events throughout November devoted to celebrating, thanking and honoring our nation’s veterans and active duty military personnel, has been organized under one comprehensive banner that includes seminars, forums, concerts, tours, screenings, symposiums and special benefit galas.
Veterans Week NYC activities include:
- Patriots Tour, bus tour of war monuments throughout the five boroughs led by Vietnam veteran (USMC) and author, Cal Snyder, November 3 – November 7
- “Stand Up for Heroes,” benefitting the Bob Woodruff Foundation with performances by Bruce Springsteen, Louis C.K., John Mulaney, John Oliver and other special guests at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, November 5
- Salute to Women Who Served and Are Serving, with host Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and guest speakers U.S. Army Col. Mary Westmoreland (Ret.), Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Loree K. Sutton, and U.S. Army Col. Connie Christianson (Ret.), at General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, November 6
- Star Spangled Banner Tribute – – OPEN HOUSE

Leading the parade as Grand Marshal is former New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, which is especially meaningful as the Marine Corps is the parade’s featured service branch this year.
More than 25,000 participants, including active military members, veterans of every U.S. war since World War II and marching bands from across the nation, will march up Fifth Avenue in what will mark the 95th anniversary of the first Veterans Day Parade ever.
Veterans Week NYC, includes several events honoring veterans, especially Marine Corps, and explores issues important to them. Events include the Marine Corps Birthday Dinner, marking the 239th anniversary of the founding of the Corps. Parade sponsors include Wounded Warrior Project, CHASE, HBO, UWVC Recycling Program and History Channel.
The Parade takes place on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014, from 11:15 AM to 3:30 PM, traveling up New York City’s iconic Fifth Avenue from 26th Street to 52nd Street. It will be broadcast live from noon to 3 p.m. on FOX 5 in New York. Fox’s MyNetworkTV will also air a one-hour broadcast of parade highlights in New York City as well as Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando/Daytona Beach, Phoenix and Washington D.C.
With participants from more than 30 states and the event also being broadcast to military bases around the world and Veterans Administration hospitals across the country, the Veterans Day parade in New York City truly is “America’s Parade.”
