Last year British miner Oxus Gold accused the government of trying to take
over its mines by accusing it of breaking environmental regulations and
imprisoning a local former staff member for spying.
MTS has about nine million subscribers in Uzbekistan, which has a population
of nearly 30 million people.
In 2010, the authorities in Turkmenistan refused to renew MTS’s licence. It
had an 85 percent share of the market but was forced to withdraw, costing it
an estimated £90 million.
