A driver has been stopped in Melbourne this morning carrying nine people in his ute’s tray.

Police say the 34-year-old Monbulk man was driving erratically before he was pulled over on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy just before 2am.

They allege the driver, whose licence was suspended, was driving an unregistered vehicle.

Officers found nine people in the back of the ute and one front-seat passenger, and believe two others jumped out earlier and ran from the scene.

Police say the driver told them it was “an overreaction because no-one was hurt”.

He will be charged with endangering life and driving an unregistered vehicle.

The ute has been impounded under anti-hooning legislation.
