In 1964 the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) was founded. This was a merger of the American Association for the United Nations and the US committee for the United Nations.
The UNA-USA is a membership program of the UN Foundation , “dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and work of the UN among the American people. Its education, membership and advocacy programs emphasize the importance of cooperation among nations and the need for American leadership at the UN.”
Through education and mobilizing Americans to support the principles and work of the UN, the UNA-USA endeavors to contribute to constructive leadership in the US and ensure the US achieves the goals of the UN Charter .
The creation of the “global classroom” is an education program based on the UNA-USA. They foster teaching techniques and curriculum as is exampled by the Model United Nations . Students pretend to be UN ambassadors and debate UN agendas in a role playing exercise that is meant to inspire the idea that global governance is the future of the world’s nations.
Supported by the US Department of State , the global classroom has infiltrated more than 24 major cities public education system worldwide. Some of those cities are:
• Chicago Public Schools
• Kyung Hee University
• Lebanesse American University
• Mulberry School for Girls
Organizations such as the President of MTV Networks International and Bill Roedy, UNAIDS Ambassador, have spoken before the global classrooms international student delegation at the UN General Assembly. This combination of pop culture and UN policy has made the UN agenda to normalize global governance within the youth communities.
This alliance has allowed several Americans to serve at the UNA-USA. These people include:
• Arthur J. Goldberg, former Justice of the US Supreme Court and US permanent representative to the United Nations
• James S. McDonnell, former chairman of the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation
• Elliot L. Richardson, former US attorney general and US representative to the Law of the Sea Conference
• William Scranton, former governor of Pennsylvania and US permanent representative to the United Nations
• Cyrus Vance, former secretary of state
• John C. Whitehead, former deputy secretary of state
In 1999, the UN Business Council (UNBC) was merged into the UNA-USA as a way to allocate support for the UN among world business leaders and employers of major US corporations.
Recently the UNBC hosted an event where private sector “leaders” were able to meet with the UN “and to discuss global topics of mutual interest, all in a relaxed and informal setting”. Multi-national corporations, member states and UN representatives, through the UN Global Compact , discussed ways in which they could assist in strengthening the UN’s Sustainable Development agenda; which includes the implementation of Agenda 21 policies worldwide.
Making better corporate use of Brazil and empowering the private sector “leaders” at the UN Earth Summit Rio+20 this month was foremost on the docket of topics. Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, stressed that multi-national corporations should be allowed unbridled access to the UN through corporate partnerships.
Ambassador Torsella, the U.S. Representative for UN Management and Reform told attendees that the Obama administration is extremely committed to the UN as an “indispensible” organization. Obama is eager to collaborate with the UN and encourages the business community to “engage in how the UN does things”.
Back in 2010, the UNA-USA created a strategic alliance with the UN Foundation to further entice membership to the UN by world leaders and multi-national corporations. Their collaboration funneled more funds into the UN’s infiltration into public education and creating advocacies that promote the UN.
The UN Foundation’s sister organization, the Better World Campaign , focuses on making sure the relationship between the US and the UN remains strong.
If there were ever a question as to why the US policies enacted by President Obama mirror those agendas of the UN, the answer is the UNA-USA.
