Using internet animalistic act: Rabbi

Addressing tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews who staged a rally in New York City on Sunday to protest against the ethical dangers of the internet, Rabbi Yechiel Meir Katz compared the threat of the Internet to the dangers the European Enlightenment, in the late 1800s, posed to traditional Jewish life.

An estimated 65,000 Haredim men from New York, Baltimore, Lakewood, Philadelphia and other states attended the gathering that was held on Sunday in the Citi Field, Queens.

“A terrible test has been sent to us that has inflicted so much terrible damage on Haredim,” Katz said, describing the harm greater than threat posed by secularism.

“In the previous challenges, we knew who the enemy was. Today, however, the challenge is disguised and not discernible to the naked eye,” he explained.

Women were not permitted to attend, but the speeches delivered by American, Canadian and Israeli rabbis were broadcast live to audiences of women in schools and halls in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

The event which was organized by the Ichud HaKehillos, a New York-based union of Haredi synagogues and communities, warned against the misuse of the Internet and exposure to the “impure” contents on the Web.

The organizers insisted that Internet users should use Web filtering software to limit their exposure to inappropriate, immoral materials.

Several rabbis have already banned the use of the Net, arguing that the technology does more harm than good.
