nsnbc : Colombia’s National Police announced that it had intercepted a shipment of 20 M-4 assault rifles that had been legally purchased in the United States and shipped to Colombia. While the Colombian government and left-wing guerrilla FARC and ELN are engaged in ending 51 years of civil war, the greatest security threat is currently posed by right-wing neo-paramilitaries and drug traffickers.
Colombia’s National Police noted that the weapons shipment was meant for drug trafficking groups along the country’s Pacific west coast. Both the left-wing FARC-EP and the ELN are involved in drug trafficking. Persons who are holding public offices have also been implicated in drug trafficking. A well-informed nsnbc contact in Bogota commented “everybody is doing drugs here”.
The FARC-EP and the Colombian government have, however, signed a comprehensive agreement on illicit drugs as part of the final peace accord that is expected to be signed in 2016.
The FARC-EP and the Colombian government implemented a bilateral ceasefire that came into effect on January 1, 2016. The above suggests that the “drug traffickers” mentioned by the police are more likely members of Colombia’s neo-paramilitary such as Los Urabenos.
Another factor that suggests that the weapons were meant for right-wing paramilitaries or drug traffickers is that both the FARC-EP and the ELM predominantly use Kalshnikov assault rifles including newer 200 series models.
The use of M-4 and similar rifles is more prevalent among right-wing paramilitaries which often have links to the United States Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. troops stationed in Colombia, as well as to the right-wing Cuban and Colombian mafia organizations that are especially strongly represented in Florida, USA.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reportedly cooperated with Colombia’s Special Investigations Unit DIJIN to cease the shipment.
The 20 M-4 assault rifles are, however, only a small portion of the weapons that are trafficked from the United States to Colombian neo-paramilitaries. The M-4s that allegedly had been purchased legally in the United States had been disassembled and their serial numbers removed before being shipped along with mechanical parts. The planned recipient of the shipment was an electronics company in the southern Guaviare province.
It is noteworthy that the United States’ Customs and Border Protection cooperated with the DIJIN to cease these 20 assault rifles at a time when the U.S. government attempts to further restrict U.S. citizens’ right to buy, sell, possess and carry firearms.
