US vows support for Syrian rebels

“We’ve learned that there is a great deal of difficulty for the opposition to communicate with one another inside Syria and from inside to outside Syria to their counterparts who are along the border of Turkey or elsewhere,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Fox News after the conference.

The US has also supported a move led by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to set up a fund to pay Syrian rebels and defected soldiers who have joined the opposition.

The proposal was made on Sunday at the anti-Damascus conference of the so-called “Friends of Syria,” a group comprising of some 70 Western and Arab countries, which Damascus calls the “enemies of Syria”.

Analysts believe Washington’s insistence on funding the rebels signals American blessing for a bid by the Saudi Arabian dictatorship to arm the Syrian opposition, which White House has so far publicly opposed.

Clinton announced at the end of the conference that “we are going to be supporting the SNC [Syrian National Congress] with direct assistance, in areas such as communications,” adding that, “Others are going to be supporting fighters associated with the SNC.”

This is while Damascus has accepted a six-point plan by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to end the year-long unrest in Syria.

Two veto-holding members of the UN Security Council, Russia and China, as well as Iraq, the presiding member of the Arab League, have boycotted the Istanbul talks.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told reporters in Moscow that the conference does not seek a settlement in Syria and desires to prepare the stage for an intervention.
