US votes to cut trade with Russian firm

The amendment was adopted by 407 lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Thursday and was attached to the 2013 defense spending bill but has to wait for the final approval of the Senate.

Jim Moran, a Democrat lawmaker who introduced the measure, insisted that the Russian firm sells mortars, sniper rifles and attack helicopters to Syria.

Last week, Pentagon announced a $171 million contract with the Russian firm to purchase 10 Mi-17 attack helicopters to be used by the Afghan military.

The anti-Russia vote came only hours after Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution against the Syrian government at the UN Security Council, sparkling anger among Western countries that had demanded further sanctions against the Arab country.

Russia’s ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin defended the veto, arguing that the draft resolution was “biased” and that the sponsors of the draft were already aware it would be vetoed.

Churkin described the unrest in Syria as a geopolitical battle that is being fought in the Arab nation, and called on the international community to focus its efforts to support UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s efforts to restore calm to Syria.

China’s UN envoy Li Baodong also condemned the resolution for violating the consensus reached in the talks held in Geneva earlier this month.

He said the draft was aimed at putting pressure on only one party and that it would have undermined regional peace, had it been approved.
