Addressing a conference titled “[Persian] Gulf Security: Regional Facts and International Interests” in the Bahraini capital, Manama, Admiral John W. Miller said on Tuesday that the US would secure shipping movements in the strategic area in cooperation with regional countries, especially Bahrain which is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.
The two-day meeting is organized by the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies (RUSI) and Bahrain Center for Strategic and International Studies and Energy (DERASAT) and will focus on security arrangements between the US, UK and the [Persian] Gulf Co-operation Council countries, Iran’s nuclear energy program and political unrest in the region.
Washington is offering full support to Bahrain while the ruling Al Khalifa regime is continuing a brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters for more than a year.
Backed by the US military and the United Kingdom, Bahrain has demolished dozens of mosques and imprisoned opposition leaders and political and human rights activists since the beginning of anti-regime protests in the country last year.
