FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda Shalabi has reportedly been on a hunger strike since February 16, when she was re-arrested at her home in the occupied West Bank.
The 29-year-old female Palestinian prisoner has been under “administrative detention” and her lawyer says she has been placed in “solitary confinement as punishment for the hunger strike.”
Shalabi is one of the detainees re-arrested by Israeli forces over the past few weeks. The detainees were freed from Israeli jails in October and December of last year under a deal mediated by Egypt to free 1,027 Palestinian inmates in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Palestinian people held a demonstration in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Saturday to express solidarity with Shalabi.
On February 28, Palestinian demonstrators also gathered outside the UN office in Gaza City to demand the release of Shalabi. A similar demonstration was also held outside the Red Cross office in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Khalid Amayreh, journalist from Al-Khalil, to share his opinion on this issue.
The following is a transcript of the interview:
Press TV: Let us go over some of the facts. Hana Shalabi has now been on 32 days of an open-ended hunger strike protesting her arbitrary detention by the Israelis. She can be held in detention without charges being brought up to four months which can also be renewed. Hana is one of the almost at least five thousand Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails without charge or trial and without access to any evidence against her.
Now my question is despite her deteriorating situation, how come there has been no word from the United Nations or even the United States?
Amayreh: Well unfortunately the United States and the United Nations to a large extent are at Israel’s beck and call, and they utterly ignore Palestinian grievances and they suppose this is not a new phenomenon.
This has always been the case because Israel is treated as special case by the international order which is controlled by the United States and the West.
Press TV: Another question Mr. Amayreh, when do you think the issue of Palestinian prisoners rights and all the violations taking place in the Israeli prisons will eventually be adequately addressed by the international community?
Amayreh: Well as long as the present international order which is as I said controlled by the United States, as long as this continues there is no realistic hope for a dramatic transformation in international morality which would enable the world to address Palestinian grievances adequately.
Unfortunately this is not something symptomatic. It is something that is very well established. You cannot defeat racism and Zionism with analgesic. You got to eradicate them completely.
