“They are disrespectful to all deceased veterans and all veterans who have served this country,” he told the newspaper.
“If this is a matter of saving a few hundred dollars on maintenance, I don’t think that’s a reasonable idea when it comes to honouring our veterans.”
After being inundated with complaints from residents, the council said it would reconsider the ordinance.
A note posted on the council’s website read: “‘The city of Mineral Wells would like to clarify its position in that this action was not in any way taken with the intention of bringing any dishonour or disrespect to any of our Veterans, past or present.”
A meeting to discuss the ruling is scheduled for July 10. In the meantime residents are free to plant flags at gravesides including today, Independence Day, the council said.
