‘US to give advanced arms to Israel’

Israeli daily Maariv cited Western diplomats and intelligence sources on Thursday that during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the US, the White House offered to provide Tel Aviv with advanced bunker busters and long-range refueling planes.

The new bunker busting bombs are capable of destroying Iran’s underground nuclear energy facilities, the report said.

The military aid has reportedly been offered in return for the postponement of Israel’s potential military strike against Iran till 2013, after the US presidential elections.

During the visit, Netanyahu reportedly notified Obama that Tel Aviv has made no decisions about an attack on Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, stating, however, that Israel retains the right to resort to the military “option.”

On Wednesday, head of London-based Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) John Chipman also ruled out the possibility of a premature Israeli military strike against Iran in 2012.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program. Washington and Tel Aviv have also threatened Iran with a military strike against its nuclear installations.

Iran has denied the allegations and promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
