Mr Bleich shared the story of his former university roommate who was working in the World Trade Centre’s Tower 2 when the first tower was hit by a plane.
”Seeing the destruction downstairs next door he started downstairs but no one followed,” Mr Bleich said.
”[He was] about halfway down the tower when the second plane hit just above him, cutting off all of his colleagues – everyone, everyone he knew from work.”
Mr Bleich’s friend had barely left the building when it collapsed. Covered in dust and blood, he walked 29km back to his apartment where his girlfriend was already mourning his death.
He promptly proposed marriage. The couple have since married, had a child and moved to another state where Mr Bleich’s friend works as a teacher. ”That is how he answered the question ‘what do we do now?’, Mr Bleich said.
”In the face of the question of September 12th, ‘what do we do now?’, There is no answer other than ‘We will be better’.”
