US tells Pakistan to up war on terror

“Combating violent extremism is something we all agree on,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a press conference at the end of a trip to India on Tuesday.

“We look to the government of Pakistan to do more. It needs to make sure its territory is not used as a launching pad for terrorist attacks, including inside Pakistan,” she urged.

On Monday, Clinton said in Kolkata that several significant militant leaders, including al-Qaeda’s Ayman al-Zawahiri remained at large somewhere in Pakistan.

She also said she was “well aware” that the Pakistani government had not yet taken steps to help secure the conviction of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who is wanted over the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

But the Pakistani army hit back at the comments, accusing the US of seeking to make Pakistan an escape-goat for its failure to end the war in neighboring Afghanistan.

Tensions between Washington and Islamabad have been fueled by the ongoing US assassination drone strikes in Pakistan.

Last November a US air-strike on Pakistani military outposts along the border with Afghanistan left at least 24 soldiers dead.

The attack further strained relations between Islamabad and Washington and prompted Pakistan to shut down vital supply routes to US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan.
