The school district is facing a number of lawsuits in connection with multiple allegations of students being sexually abused by teachers and the district failing to have stopped the occurrence of these abuses.
The most recent case involves Robert Pimentel, a former teacher at George de la Torre Elementary School, who is under arrest on suspicion of molesting 12 students.
The legal action follows the release of a state audit that shows evidence of hundreds of abuse complaints that the district never reported.
Attorney Martha Escutia, who represents more than 30 children abused by teachers at the Miramonte Elementary School last year, says evidence shows a consistent pattern of abuse with Latinos as the victims.
Advocates believe that Latino families were targeted as they fear deportation.
Documents show that the accused teachers were transferred from school to school instead of being dismissed.
Under California education law, dismissing a teacher is a difficult process.
However, state lawmakers are working to fix the problem by introducing a bill that reforms the dismissal procedure for teachers suspected of abuse.
