US students protest tuition fee hikes

A number of college students at six California State university campuses on Wednesday participated in the protest move against steady tuition hikes as well as planned cuts in educational funding.

The hunger strike effort has been planned as a protest against a reported 318-percent hike in college tuition fees over the past decade.

The student protesters are demanding an immediate freeze in university tuition fees, maintenance of current diversity of classes offered in state college campuses as well as cuts in the high pay and perks of university administrators.

The hunger strikers also rallied to draw attention to a one-billion-dollar cut in funding for California State Universities since 2008.

The increasing college tuition fees amid the persisting cuts in education funding in many US states comes as the country continues to struggle with a financial downturn that began in 2008.

Many American college students have also taken active part in anti-corporate protest efforts organized by the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The Occupy Wall Street movement began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York’s financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest against corruption, the unjust distribution of wealth in the country, and the excessive influence of big corporations on US policies.
