nsnbc : Following recent revelations that the United States’ National Security Agency used its embassy in the Venezuelan capital Caracas to spy on the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA, State Department spokesman John Kirby admitted to the spying but denied that the U.S. used the intelligence for economic espionage.
Confused? State Department spokesman, Rear Admiral John Kirby appeared to be confusing principles when he was confronted with questions about a document, apparently leaked by Edward Snowden via The Intercept, that revealed that the NSA uses the U.S.’ embassy in Caracas to spy on the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA.
Kirby dodged questions about the economic espionage by claiming that “The United States has no intent to destabilize the Venezuelan government”.
Kirby was confronted with questions about the NSA spy scandal after the report, on Wednesday, appeared to show that the NSA used the U.S. Embassy in Caracas to obtain internal communications from the PDVSA’s computer network and to crack the State-owned oil company’s encryption codes.
Not denying the espionage, Kirby would claim that it is the U.S.’ policy that the espionage is never aimed at benefiting U.S. corporations and that there’s no intent to use electronic surveillance for commercial gains.
Besides that, Kirby would note that the United States regularly reviews its policies for electronic warfare and that “it does not comment publicly about it”. Kirby affirmed that the United States would “respond through the appropriate diplomatic channels”.
Kirby would further claim that Venezuela’s response to the revelations about the alleged NSA spying was an attempt to deflect from other issues. Kirby said:
“We’ve seen many times that the Venezuelan government tries to distract from its own actions by blaming the United States and other countries for events inside its own country”.
Kirby’s attempt to deflect from NSA spying by accusing the Venezuelan government of using the scandal to deflect from domestic issues caused laughter among large swaps of the Venezuelan population. Rear Admiral and U.S. State Department Spokesman John Kirby has earned a new medal – the Pinocchio Award – would some say.
While it may or may not be correct that the NSA does not directly provide information to U.S. corporations, it has the clear objective to benefit the United States’ national security – which includes the management of information about oil prices, especially from an oil exporting country that the United States’ recently has designated as a special security threat to the USA. The United States has, along with Saudi Arabia, been one of the main drivers behind this year’s drop of oil prices. The drop in oil prices has had considerable adverse effects on Venezuela’s economy.
Thursday morning Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Alejandro Fleming delivered a formal letter to the U.S.’ Chargé d’affaires Lee McClenny at the U.S.’ Embassy in Caracas. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro responded to the revelations by calling on his administration to immediately review US – Venezuelan relations.
