nsnbc : A US delegation including members of the Department of State, on Tuesday, met with the Raqqa Civilian Council in the Syrian town of Ayn al-Issa. The parties discussed problems faced by the Council amidst the ongoing fight against ISIS and reconstruction of infrastructure in liberated areas.
The U.S. delegation included members of the State Department, engineers from TRTK, MAG, RAMCO and IRD, as well as members from a number of civil society organizations to discuss reconstruction as well as aid and humanitarian work in liberated areas.
Discussions about infrastructure reconstruction focused mainly on bridges, roads, and the electricity grid. The delegation and members of the Council also discussed the situation of internally displaced persons, the situation of civilians in liberated towns and villages, as well as the clearance of mines, left-behind explosives, improvised explosive devices, and other hazards so displaced persons can return to their homes.
Omar Alloush, a member of the Raqqa Civilian Council’s Relations Committee stated that the Council had received nearly 1,000 tons of relief items which have been distributed by the Council’s Office for Humanitarian Organizations in camps and villages. More aid is expected to arrive, also on a regular basis, said Alloush.
