Invoking the emotional national response to the shooting massacre of 20 first-grade children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the state of Connecticut last December, the top lawmaker from the state of Nevada emphasized that Republican obstructionism would be viewed as an insult to the families of the slain pupils, rejecting the move as shameful and against the will of most Americans, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
“The least Republicans owe the parents of these 20 little babies who are murdered at Sandy Hook is a thoughtful debate about whether stronger laws could have saved their little girls and boys,” Reid said.
The development came as the US Senate began Monday its formal debate on legislation to limit gun violence following a two-week spring recess.
The majority leader announced that the Senate intends to consider in the coming days a series of gun-control proposals backed by Democratic lawmakers which include an expanded background check process for handgun sales and plans to make gun trafficking a federal crime.
He also asked fellow senators to present other ideas to either enhance or further weaken federal gun regulations.
In his remarks, Reid further pointed to a letter he received on Monday from 13 Senate Republicans that have threatened to filibuster such legislation because they think the proposals would infringe on the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.
The threat “flies in the face of what 90 percent of Americans want,” said the senior US lawmaker.
Meanwhile, Republican congressional aides also said on Monday that they expect more Republican senators to sign on to the filibuster threat as they return to Washington from their Spring break in the coming days.
Filibustering in the US Congress is used by lawmakers that oppose legislation and then try to block its passage by continuously speaking at the chamber for as long as they can.
