US senators call for arming Syrian opp.

In a statement released on Friday, Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham and independent Senator Joe Lieberman, urged “the community of responsible nations” to take “tangible actions” to aid the Syrian opposition.

“This assistance should include access to weapons, tactical intelligence, communications equipment, financing and medical supplies,” the statement said.

The joint statement also said that the aerial surveillance drones that are already being used in the Syrian skies should also be used to “document” what it called attacks on the Syrian opposition by Syrian forces.

On Wednesday, pro-Israeli US Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich also voiced their support for the armed groups in Syria with the help of Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

President Assad earlier said that some foreign countries are fueling unrest in Syria by supporting and funding armed terrorist groups fighting against the government. He said that they are blocking attempts to end months of unrest in the country and are preventing it from treading the path of reforms.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March last year. Hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the Syrian government of killing the protesters. Damascus says, however, that “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are responsible for the unrest and that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
