‘US sanctions target ordinary Iranians’

“So how can the US and its Western allies claim that they are not harming the Iranian people when they are trying to make economic life harder and harder for average, ordinary Iranians? That is clearly part of their strategy, you know, to drive a wedge between the Iranian people and the government. Then obviously by all indications its strategy has not worked,” Kaveh Afrasiabi said in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

Referring to the latest US sanctions against Iran, Afrasiabi said by imposing the latest bans against Iran, the US has admitted that previous economic embargos on the Islamic Republic have been practically ineffective.

“They are targeting their own trade partners, such as China, which was exempted from the oil sanctions and yet as a result of the new sanctions, imposed by the Obama administration today, China is again targeted and that shows, really, the incoherence of the Obama administration’s policy and is also legally questionable because it interferes in the right of other nations to engage in free trade per terms of the World Trade Organization [WTO],” the political analyst added.

Afrasiabi said the sanctions are more harmful to the Western economic interests than to the Iranian economy as “some 80 percent of Iran’s oil market is unaffected by the sanctions as the result of the exemptions.”

Afrasiabi added that in a few months, however, the US will have to increase the pressure and reverse these exemptions as a result of which Obama administration will collide with countries such as China and others that are main energy partners of Iran.
