“I think by now everyone knows that the United States is trying to hurt ordinary Iranians. The objective is to cause pain and suffering for ordinary people and that is a part of American policy. And the same is true with the Europeans, by the way,” Mohammad Marandi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Press TV on Thursday.

He added, “The intent is to prevent people from obtaining medicine by sanctioning the Central Bank, from having jobs, to cause suffering among women and children. That is the objective.”

The Iranian political analyst further noted that Washington’s sanctions against countries in the Middle East are self-defeating since they create hostility towards the United States throughout the region and beyond.

Marandi stated that the new US sanctions on Iran have nothing to do with the country’s nuclear energy program, but rather aim to hurt ordinary Iranians in the multiple objectives.

“One is to overthrow the Islamic Republic [of Iran] and we have seen that it has had no effect and its strength continues to increase while the West is declining,” he said.

“The second is to control the oil because the United States controls most of the oil producing countries and Iran is one of the very few countries that is independent and therefore in order to control countries like China, India and Asian countries that are on the rise, the United States would need and the Europeans would need to have the last one or two countries that are independent under control to retain authority over these rising powers.”

“So it is basically Israel and oil and subjugation that are the key objectives,” the Iranian political analyst concluded.

The US Congress on August 1 approved new sanctions targeting Iran’s energy and shipbuilding sectors.

The measure now heads to President Barack Obama for his expected signature.

The new anti-Iran sanctions target any person or company which works with Iran’s petroleum or natural gas sector, provides insurance to the National Iranian Oil Company, engages with uranium mining with Iran, or sells oil tankers to the country.
