“I believe in action for action, but I think in this case the burden of action falls on the Iranians to demonstrate their seriousness and we are going to keep the sanctions in place and the pressure on Iran as they consider… what they’ll bring to the table in Baghdad and we’ll respond accordingly,” Clinton said on Monday.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi earlier called on Western governments to lift their sanctions against Tehran before the next round of talks with the P5+1 — Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany.
“We are going to take this one step at a time, but clearly any process would have to have reciprocal expectations and actions,” added the top US diplomat.
Iran and the P5+1 group wrapped up their latest negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday and agreed to hold the next round of the talks in Baghdad on May 23, 2012. Both sides hailed the talks as “constructive” and “positive.”
Tehran and the P5+1 had previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva, Switzerland in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.
