US, S Korea launch joint war game

The military exercises, which are part of the annual Max Thunder war games by the US and South Korea, were launched on Monday and are reportedly aimed at displaying the “readiness and joint air firepower” of the duo.

According to a statement issued by the South Korean air force, about 60 warplanes, including jet fighters, KC-135 refueling aircraft and AWACS surveillance planes, are taking part in the annual drill which will continue until May 18.

“This year’s drill is the biggest of its kind since Max Thunder began in 2008,” an air force spokesman said.

North Korea has denounced the joint exercises.

Some 28,000 US troops are based in South Korea.

The US and South Korea have conducted numerous massive joint sea and air drills in waters east of the Korean Peninsula.

The allies conducted joint military exercises in March, 2012 dubbed “Key Resolve and Foal Eagle” at Camp Carroll located in southeast of Seoul.
