‘US ramps up covert ops against Iran’

“According to a number of senior American intelligence and Mideast policy officials, speaking on background,” the US has significantly increased its covert sabotage activities against Iran, read an article by Marc Ambinder in the Huffington Post on March 10.

According to the article, although the US government has announced that it is not conducting “any active measures” inside Iran, “the CIA’s ops arm, the National Clandestine Service, along with the US military, are devoting thousands of person-hours per day working along the periphery of the country.”

By so doing, the US has attempted to convince the Israelis that Washington is sensitive to Tel Aviv’s “red lines” and concerns regarding Iran, Ambinder wrote.

The US is also using intelligence collection called MASINT (measurement and signature intelligence) to gather information about Iran’s nuclear energy program, he further claimed.

“MASINT sensors on satellites, drones, and on the ground can detect everything from the electromagnetic signatures created by testing conventional missile systems to disturbances in the soil and geography around a hidden nuclear facility to streams of radioactive particles that are byproducts of the uranium enrichment process,” the article read.

It further said that the American drone recently downed and landed by Iran’s Army in December, the RQ-170, was built “specifically to spy on the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs.”

The US and Israel have been escalating their war rhetoric against Iran in recent months, alleging that there is a diversion in the country’s nuclear energy program towards a weapons program.

Tehran refutes the allegations, noting that as a member of International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
