According to the leaked documents, which are the latest being disclosed by CIA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the money was paid across a range of projects, all resulted in GCHQ spying on behalf of the US.
Moreover, it was revealed that GCHQ is spending money on efforts to gather personal information, seeking the ability to “exploit any phone, anywhere, anytime.”
The papers also show that though Britain’s intelligence gathering has progressed immensely over the past five years nearly 60 percent of the UK’s Internet and phone intelligence comes from the NSA.
Britain’s biggest fear was that “US perceptions of the … partnership diminish, leading to loss of access, and/or reduction in investment … to the UK”, the documents suggested.
The revelation comes on the same day that British Foreign Secretary William Hague visited GCHQ’s headquarters and stressed the staff acted “in full accordance with our laws and values”.
