US on spying complaints: All nations spy

Documents disclosed by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden have revealed spying programs by the US intelligence community that collect massive amounts of phone and Internet records of both American citizens and people from other nationals throughout the world.

According to the leaked documents, the US National Security Agency has been spying on Americans, Brazilians, Germans, French and many others for the past years.

The latest revelations show that the NSA has been eavesdropping on politicians and ordinary people in Mexico and France.

On Sunday, German magazine Der Spiegel reported that the NSA has been spying on top Mexican officials for years.

Also on Monday, people in France woke up to news that their phone call records and email communications have been gathered by the American super spy agency when the French daily Le Monde reported that the NSA targeted French communication networks.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he was “deeply shocked” by the news and demanded an explanation from Washington. But the White House said it was doing what “all nations” do.

“As a matter of policy, we have made clear that the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type gathered by all nations,” said Caitlin Hayden, National Security Council spokeswoman.

“As the president said in his speech at the UN General Assembly, we’ve begun to review the way that we gather intelligence, so that we properly balance the legitimate security concerns of our citizens and allies with the privacy concerns that all people share,” she added.
