US obesity numbers expected to rise

In a 400-plus page report issued on Tuesday by the Institute of Medicine, experts called for an urgent action to reverse national obesity trends, as more than two-thirds of the American adults are obese.

Moreover, according to a research conducted by Duke University, the number of obese adults will grow to 42 percent by 2030, with severe obesity expected to double over the next two decades.

“The obesity problem is likely to get much worse without a major public health intervention,” says Eric Finkelstein, a health economist with Duke University’s Global Health Institute and lead researcher on the new study.

Experts recommend that policy changes should be restructured at the school level where eating habits are molded for life, with the study noting that about one-third of US children are currently overweight or obese.

The obesity epidemic fuels diabetes, heart disease and other ailments — and adds significantly to the nation’s rising healthcare bill.

As of 2010, about 36 percent of the adults were obese, which is roughly 13 kilograms over a healthy weight, and 6 percent were severely obese, which is 45 or more kilograms over a healthy weight.
