‘US-led states exaggerate Syria unrest’

The Syrian armed groups have rejected any dialogue with the government.

The rejection came after the former UN chief Kofi Annan called for finding a way of implementing political reforms.

He warned against military intervention in the country and said any miscalculation about Syria will have dire regional consequences.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Mohsen Saleh, professor at Lebanese University, to share his opinion on this issue.

The following is a transcript of the interview:

Press TV: Professor Saleh, the armed groups in Syria rejecting talks. What does that tell you and where is the situation headed under the current circumstances?

Saleh: Of course we have to look at these gangs and the supervisor of the people who are helping them in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and of course the France and the British army are participating in training and aiding financially and militarily in Syria on the borders of Lebanon and Jordan.

That is why I guess the what so-called opposition parties, they reject any kind of talks with the regime and they really responded negatively from long time ago when even the Arab initiative and the Arab observers went to Syria.

So we have to look at the situation from this point of view. Do the Americans and their allies want a real political solution or they want to exaggerate and make the situation worse?

And that is why I guess the American ambassador in Beirut, they asked the Lebanese government to help the gangs and make a kind of camp for them and some of the Lebanese government officials, they rejected such proposals and they said well, the political solution would be the fine way of doing the situation better.

Press TV: Well Mr. Saleh, looking at what kind of solutions Syria needs now, on the one hand there is this political solution, the solution that goes through dialogue that Kofi Annan has been now talking about but however we are not seeing that option being supported from the West or from the regional countries that are allies to the United states.

Why do you think they are not after dialogue in Syria? They have been calling for talks for instance in the situation of Bahrain for instance or Saudi Arabia and even Palestine but not in the case of Syria.

Saleh: Well we should look at the Americans and the French. Now they are going into elections and the situation in their internal politics needs a kind of acceleration and try to say well we are standing by the what so-called revolution and specially in Syria and while as you mentioned in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, they do not speak any word. On the contrary, they try to cover up the crimes committed by the Bahraini regime.

And now in Syria I guess the regime was able to put down all these people, these gangs especially in Homs and proposed a new constitution and made a good referendum in Syria and succeeded all the way in defending the regime and the Syrians from these gangs.

Now I guess the situation is going to be solved according to what the regime wants since the military institution and the political institution and even the economy, is still functioning very well in Syria.

I guess the upper hand now is for the Syrian regime and I guess the Americans and the Westerners and some Arabs, of course Qatar and Saudi Arabia tends to do any harm to this regime.
