“The size of the victory was historic, and Callista and I will always remember
South Carolina because it was a tremendous, tremendous experience,” he said.
He also apologised for ending the state’s streak of picking the presidential
nominee.
Since 1980, voters in the state have chosen the eventual nominee, from Ronald
Reagan, George H W Bush, Bob Dole, George W Bush and John McCain.
Many of those candidates were underdogs at the time of their South Carolina
victories.
“This will make me feel slightly guilty every time we go through South
Carolina,” Mr Gingrich said.
Mr Gingrich bowed out of the race more than $4 million (£2.5 million) in debt.
As he was mulling an exit from the race, his aides were talking with Romney’s
campaign about how his one-time rival could help him retire the debt.
Romney’s team has offered to be helpful in that effort
