US lawmakers urge Afghan withdrawal

In a series of meetings, the panel of the anti-war lawmakers reiterated that the US forces’ withdrawal from Afghanistan must happen earlier than the intended 2024 deadline.

“The Afghan leaders and the international community have to look for a political settlement, but the security force who provide the foundation for a stability that is absolutely necessary as our troops withdraw and will withdraw,” US Senator Jack Reed said.

Meanwhile, CongressmenTimothy Johnson of Illinois and James McGovern of Massachusetts argued that military efforts are being wasted in Afghanistan and that there were no reasons for US intervention to continue there.

A deal between US President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai hammered out in early May this year keeps US and allied troops in Afghanistan until 2024. But with worsening economic conditions in the US and the war’s high costs, the panel says policy reforms are needed.

Washington is facing a declining support of the American public for its war on Afghanistan with an increasing number of American people demanding the withdrawal of troops from the volatile country.

“There is no individual single incident that seals the fate of the US war in Afghanistan, but you can see the pattern day after day with US operations being carried out,” porter added.

The panel has submitted a revised resolution for Congress to consider if the troop withdrawal doesn’t commence in 2014. So far, the legislative draft has been rejected.
