‘US keeps evidence from Manning trial’

Manning’s defense team says Washington is withholding 250,000 pages of documents relating to the case that could help to prove their client’s innocence or reduce his sentence.

Manning’s civilian lawyer, David E. Coombs, has lodged a motion with the military court for access to the files.

Coombs wrote that the government has revealed to him in a throwaway footnote that there are 250,000 pages in its possession that relate to Manning, WikiLeaks and secret official assessments of the damage that the massive leak caused to US interests around the world.

The former US army intelligent analyst was arrested in May 2010 for allegedly giving more than 700,000 military field reports from Iraq and Afghanistan and US diplomatic cables to Whistleblower website WikiLeaks.

The leak of the military documents shed light on civilian deaths, while the diplomatic cables sparked a firestorm by disclosing the private remarks of heads of state and candid observations by senior US officials.

Manning faces 22 charges, including “aiding the enemy”, that carries a possible sentence of life in military custody.
