‘US, Israel talk Iran, Syria’

They discussed ‘a range of regional issues, including Syria, Iran, and the ongoing changes in the Middle East,’ the US Department of Defense Press Secretary, George Little said after the meeting on Wednesday.

Little said that this was Panetta’s fourth meeting with Barak since being sworn in as defense secretary in July.

“Panetta is always pleased to meet with Minister Barak and discuss ways to strengthen the US-Israel defense relationship,” the press secretary added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US President Barack Obama are also scheduled to meet at the White House on March 5.

The US and Israel have each considered the other to be its most strategic ally.

Washington has invariably stonewalled the United Nations actions against Tel Aviv. It also provides Tel Aviv with nearly USD 3 billion in military aid each year.

On Monday, David Sanger, a prominent American journalist, wrote in The New York Times that the US has provided Israel with the military technology and arms to aid Tel Aviv in a possible attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities aimed at sabotaging its nuclear energy program, which, the West claims, contains a covert military dimension.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have used the claim to impose sanctions against Iran.

Israeli officials have recently ramped up their war rhetoric, threatening Iran with military strikes in case the US-engineered sanctions against the country failed to force Tehran into abandoning its civilian nuclear energy program.

This is while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s nuclear energy program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.

Iran argues that, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
