US election: Mitt Romney aims to leapfrog Barack Obama with expat fundraising

The Romney campaign has thrown a cloak of secrecy around the fund-raising
dinners, ordering attendees not speak to outsiders about the events which
have been organised by ScottPrenn, a London company specialising in throwing
parties for political campaigns and charities.

Some Romney aides reportedly advised Mr Romney against the trip in case it
handed ammunition to Democrat opponents seeking to portraying the former
Massachusetts governor as looking out only for the interests of the
wealthiest Americans.

Organisers have also been sensitive to links between Mr Romney and Bob
Diamond, the former Barclays chief executive who resigned earlier this month
after being engulfed in the LIBOR rate-fixing scandal, and has since also
stepped down as one of Mr Romney’s hosts.

However one guest who is attending the reception said it was unfair to
stereotype those attending the events as simply being drawn from the
financial elite.

“I’m not a lawyer or an investment banker and I know others like me who
– even though it’s a stretch – are wanting to put our support behind this
man. He is pro-growth and pro-jobs and that’s attractive during these tough
economic times in the United States.” The source added that having met
Mr Romney on a visit to London last summer, he had been unfairly portrayed
in the media.

“I met Governor Romney last summer when he came to London, and spoke at
the English speaking Union and he was very impressive. He spoke with no
notes, was clearly very smart and had a self-deprecating sense of humour,
which those of us based in London enjoyed.

“He was very real, informal and personable. Back then he was just one
potential candidate, but it’s very exciting he’s now the winner and it’s
exciting to meet him and he has a real chance of being the next President of
the United States.”
