Yet no new law has been passed, and Mr Obama’s directive to immigration
officials to stop deporting young illegal immigrants could easily be
scrapped by a new president when he leaves office.
Mr Romney, however, declined five times on Sunday to say if he would repeal
the order. “There needs to be a long-term solution so they know what
their status is,” said the former Massachusetts governor.
The interview highlighted how Mr Obama had wrong-footed his Republican
opponent, who is struggling to balance appealing to Latino voters with
reassuring the conservative base of his party.
Mr Romney took a strident line on immigration during his party primary contest
and pledged to veto the Dream Act, a plan to overhaul the migration system,
on which Mr Obama’s scheme is based.
