US election 2012: victories for Rick Santorum revive White House hopes

In a triumphant speech to supporters he used the wins to attack front-runner,
Mr Romney and President
Obama
.

“I hope you have been listening to our message because if you listen to
our message and you found out that on those issues, health care, the
environment, cap and trade and on the Wall Street bailouts, Mitt Romney has
the same positions as Barack Obama, and in fact, would not be the best
person to come up and fight for your voices for freedom in America.”

The trio of wins gives fresh momentum to Mr Santorum’s battle with Newt
Gingrich to be viewed as the top conservative alternative to the more
moderate Mitt Romney.

Mr Santorum spent the last two days campaigning in Missouri while Mr Romney
had focused on Colorado.

Speaking in Denver, Mr Romney congratulated him, but maintained he would still
win the Republican nomination.

“I want to congratulate Senator Santorum, wish him the very best. We will
keep on campaigning down the road, but I expect to become our nominee with
your help. So, I want to congratulate all of my fellow Republicans,
particularly Senator Santorum and I look forward to the contest to come,”
he said.

The Missouri primary is considered something of a ‘beauty contest’ because the
candidates do not win delegates who will take part in the August Republican
convention where the party’s presidential nominee will be officially chosen.

Missouri Republicans will select convention delegates in caucuses on March 17
in the state’s two-step process, but the primary is still considered a test
of strength among the candidates.
