US Election 2012: Stephen Colbert, the comedian who’s polling better than the Republican candidates

The comedian is urging South Carolinians to deliver a protest vote for Mr Cain
today. “He’s an outsider – how much more an outsider can you be? He’s
not even running!” he said yesterday.

Despite Mr Colbert not actually appearing on the Republican ballot in South
Carolina or anywhere else, opinion polls earlier this week found he had more
support than Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor, who promptly withdrew
from the race on Monday. Polls then found he was also leading Rick Perry,
the former Texas governor, who then also decided to end his campaign.

In an interview in character yesterday, Mr Colbert praised Mr Gingrich, the
former House Speaker, for his response to allegations that he asked his
second wife for an “open marriage” after admitting infidelity in
1999.

“Honesty is the best policy,” he said. “Here’s the thing that I
don’t think Newt Gingrich gets enough credit for: a lot of politicians screw
around on their wives, but he was enough of a gentleman to ask permission.
That’s a Southern gentleman.”
