US election 2012: Rick Santorum picks up new mega donor

Firearms producer Yonkers made a $100,000 donation and $50,000 was received
and then refunded from London-based company Liquid Capital Markets Ltd. It
is illegal for foreign business to contribute to US politics.

The right-wing conservative has been enjoying what has been labelled “the
Santorum surge” in recent weeks, eclipsing both Mitt Romney and Newt
Gingrich in the Texas polls with a 27 point lead.

Analysts said the Texas poll was yet further evidence that Mr Santorum was
emerging as the consensus candidate of the grassroots that the
moderate-liberal Mitt Romney has conspicuously failed to energise since the
primary season began in January.

“Rick Santorum has cut through the clutter and emerged as not simply the
non-Romney candidate, but as the most credible conservative candidate in the
race,” said Daron Shaw, co-director of the University of Texas/Texas
Tribune.
