US election 2012: Newt Gingrich shows why he is unelectable

He went to say that the 99 weeks that most states allow for unemployment
benefit is what it takes to get an associate degree – to retrain for a
company – implying that many jobless can’t be bothered to help themselves.

All these answers may have delighted a conservative audience in South
Carolina. He could well get a bounce in the polls heading towards Saturday’s
primary. He could do well enough to emerge as the conservative alternative
to Mitt Romney, who is labelled a moderate.

But Gingrich’s responses showed why he would be unelectable in a general
election. For every Republican cheering on his feet in the convention centre
in Myrtle Beach there were one or more Democrats sat at home cursing his
demagoguery.

In just a few minutes he made remarks that many will interpret as an
implication that black children are lazy, that President Obama favours his
own race, that the needy are greedy and the unemployed feckless.

Gingrich is a complex character who is known for thinking of 99 ideas a
minute. He once embarked on a tour with the Rev Al Sharpton to promote
better inner city education though its purpose and message remain vague.

And the idea of children working as cleaners is an interesting one, which
others well to the Left of Gingrich have raised.

But as so often, the suggestion was thrown grenade-like into the arena without
much thought. Cleaners – janitors in US parlance – earn on average $25,000 a
year. How would their families and their school age children fare if they
lost their job? Should schoolchildren really be trusted with the grittiest
parts of the cleaning public facilities? How would it work?

Welfare dependency may be an issue in places, but is blaming the unemployed,
whose ranks have been swollen by the middle class in the past few years,
really where most American voters are directing their concern? Are the
record numbers of Americans of all backgrounds turning to food stamps doing
so for the sake of it?

If Republicans
want to beat Barack Obama, they would do better than to elect a bloated
member of the Washington elite that he claims to scorn who is prone lecture
people about their motives for accepting free food and government money to
survive.
