US election 2012: Newt Gingrich hints the end is near for his campaign

National polls show the general election contest is narrowing with Mr Romney
trailing Mr Obama by an average of 3.2 per cent, although Mr Obama has leads
in many of the key swing states, including New Hampshire where Mr Romney
trails by nine points.

Officially Mr Romney, with some 690 delegates to his name, cannot clinch the
Republican nomination until late May, however he was expected to add a
further 209 delegates last night with a clean sweep of all five voting
states, bringing his total close to 900 of the 1,144 needed to win.

Mr Gingrich, who has not won since his home state of Georgia voted on March 6,
was still holding out hope that he could win the tiny state of Delaware with
its 17 electoral college votes – a win that would make no difference to the
overall contest, but could remind voters of Mr Romney’s weaknesses.

Critics of Mr Gingrich, who still has a Secret Service detail, have accused
him of wasting public money and being an inveterate publicity-seeker.

However the former House speaker said he was entitled to keep campaigning,
telling NBC News he believed he could come “very, very close” to a
win in Delaware, even as he accepted that defeat could call time on his
increasingly eccentric campaign which is now $4.3m (£2.6m) in debt.

“I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing,” said Mr
Gingrich who has ignored calls from almost the entire Republican party
establishment to drop out. “We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night
and we will look and see what the results are.”
