US election 2012: Mitt Romney cruising to Nevada victory, according to early returns

Mr Gingrich meanwhile has all but disappeared from the campaign trail over the
last 24 hours. He held a private meeting with donors at the Venetian casino
– owned by his biggest financial backer, billionaire Sheldon Adelson – and
then met strategists on Friday, but had no public appearances scheduled
until a press conference on Saturday evening.

Mr Gingrich vowed after his crushing defeat in Tuesday’s primary in Florida to
continue his fight with Mr Romney until the Republican convention in Tampa
in August.

But his uncharacteristic low profile in Nevada has raised questions about the
future of his candidacy as the Republican contest reaches a series of
Romney-friendly states before the Super Tuesday votes in early March.

Nevada uses a caucus system, with registered Republicans attending party
precinct meetings in schools and public halls across the state. The final
caucus was due to open after sundown in Las Vegas, scheduled for observant
Jews who could not attend a meeting during the Sabbath.

The state Republican party said that final tallied results would be released
at 8pm local time (4am on Sunday in London).
