Policy aides to Mr Romney were later unable to say whether their candidate
supported the Lilly Ledbetter Act, Mr Obama’s first law as president which
gives women more power to sue employers who do not pay them as much as male
colleagues.
The Obama campaign fired back with a statement from Lilly Ledbetter, the
women’s activist for whom the law is named, saying she was “shocked and
disappointed” at Mr Romney’s position.
The rapid response from Mr Obama’s Chicago headquarters served as a reminder
that a well-funded incumbent president will be a significantly more
difficult opponent than Mr Romney’s Republican rivals.
