US Election 2012: Mitt Romney accused of ‘bullying gay classmate’

Mr Romney’s campaign initially denied the incident. “Anyone who knows
Mitt Romney knows that he doesn’t have a mean-spirited bone in his body,”
Andrea Saul said in a statement. “The stories of 50 years ago seem
exaggerated and off base and Governor Romney has no memory of participating
in these incidents.”

In a separate allegation, Mr Romney is said to have taunted a different closet
homosexual student by chanting “Atta girl!” every time the boy
tried to speak in class. His campaign also said he had no recollection of
the incident.

Asked later about the incident with John Lauber, who died in 2004, Mr Romney
told Fox Radio: “I don’t remember that incident and I’ll tell you I
certainly don’t believe that I – I can’t speak for other people of course –
thought the fellow was homosexual.” He added: “Back in high
school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that, or offended,
obviously I apologise. But overall, high school years were a long time ago
and I’m glad I’ve got some good friends from those years.”

Mr Lauber, whose family said he never spoke of the incident, led a troubled
life following his expulsion from Cranbrook. He briefly lived in Britain
while taking dressage lessons but later checked into a psychiatric hospital
in Kansas. He worked in combat zones in Bosnia and Iraq as a chef for
civilian contractors and continued to dye his hair blond until his death
from liver cancer in 2004, his family said.

The timing of the damaging portrayal of Mr Romney’s school days could not have
been worse for the presumptive Republican candidate, who was also the
subject of attacks from the Obama camp yesterday over what Democrats called
his “backwards” views on same-sex marriage.

A day after President Obama publicly professed his own support for it after
months of ducking the issue, the President’s campaign put out a video
entitled “Mitt Romney: Backwards on Equality”. The video echoed
Vice-President Joe Biden’s accusation that the Republicans are “stuck
in the 1950s” on social issues.

Mr Romney, who has been attacked in the past by the Christian conservative
base of his own party for being too moderate, has come out firmly against
same-sex marriages and civil unions .
