US election 2012: best of the New Hampshire speeches

Ron Paul

The Texas Congressman used his post-vote speech to warn Republican rival Mitt
Romney that his supporters are “nibbling” at his heels. Mr Paul
thanked the Union Leader for not giving him his endorsement and rebuffed
those who had claimed he was a dangerous candidate in the race.

Quote
I have to chuckle when our opponents or the media describe you and me as
dangerous. That’s the one thing where they’re telling the truth: we’re
dangerous to the status quo in this country.

Jon Huntsman

After thanking the “ladies and gentleman” at least five times before
getting started, Jon Huntsman gave an energetic speech, booming “we are
on the hunt”. He emphasised the hard work on the ground he had done in
New Hampshire, earning the vote of the people. And the people spoke, albeit
not quite enough, as he failed
to gain enough momentum
to push him further than third place in an
effective five-man race.

Quote
Ladies and gentlemen I think we are in the hunt! I’d say third place is a
ticket to ride ladies and gentlemen. We proved the point that this state
wants its candidates to earn it the old-fashioned way, on the ground
handshake by handshake, vote by vote.

We had conversations about putting this country first ladies and gentlemen.
The greatest nation that ever was. They are tired of being divided. We need
to come together as Americans in order to solve our problems.

Rick Santorum

Off the back of an exuberant second-place finish in Iowa, Mr Santorum’s
fourth-place finale in New Hampshire was disappointing. His speech echoed
the setback with a rather deflated appearance.

Quote
We delivered a message not just for New Hampshire but for America that we have
a campaign that has a message and a messenger that can deliver what we need.

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich gave a calm speech despite his effective last place finish,
vowing to continue the fight to South Carolina. He insisted that a Gingrich
government was the way forward, saying his experience with Ronald Reagan and
Margaret Thatcher gave him the credentials to make it work.

Quote
If we had a Republican House, a Republican Senate and a Gingrich presidency it
would be amazing how much we could get done very rapidly.
