A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi said on Sunday that the wreckage of the plane was in Taliban’s hands.
The claim was confirmed by local sources in the province’s Gelan district. American forces are yet to make any comments on the report.
The US regularly uses the unmanned aircraft for attacks and spying missions in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt near the border with Afghanistan, Afghanistan itself, Somalia, and Yemen.
On January 30, US President Barack Obama confirmed that the United States was using the drones to carry out strikes against the tribal belt.
He said “a lot of these strikes have been in the FATA” — Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the official name for the tribal regions.
This was the first time Washington acknowledged using the remotely piloted aircraft to strike targets within Pakistan.
The US claims the airstrikes target al-Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan, but locals say civilians are the main victims of the assaults.
The aerial attacks were initiated by former US President George W. Bush, but have been escalated under Obama.
