Russia is demonstrating significant military capabilities in its operations in Syria, US Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart told the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) at a hearing on Tuesday.
On September 30, Russia launched an air campaign against terrorist groups in Syria following a request from President Bashar Assad. Russian authorities have stressed that the military operation will continue as long as the Syrian Armed Forces continue their offensive liberating the country’s regions from militant groups.
“We are seeing Russia demonstrates tremendous capabilities as they’ve done their out-of-area deployment in Syria,” Stewart state.
“There’s lots of weapons technology been displayed,” he added.
Recently, Russia sent Su-35 figter jets to its Hmeyimim airbase in Syria’s Latakia province. Russian Su-35 is a multirole combat aircraft which will be used as an escort for the Russian aviation in Syria, as well as for attacks against ground and underground targets.
Since 2011, Syria has been mired in a civil war with the country’s government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front.
